A friend, Helaine, posted this inspiring piece by Emily Dickinson on our Memoir Café website (www.memoircafe.com) . This piece epitomises how I have felt throughout my adult life.
If I Can Stop
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
Yes I have made many mistakes in my life, but I hope I have stayed true to myself in wanting to help others. I have never lost my 60s idealism and am thankful for that.
My café ‘sisters’ have been really supportive through my illness and their writing inspired me to complete my own memoirs. The site is run by a lovely lady called ‘Stephanie’. Browse through if you have the time.
Caroline and Jim arrived as planned yesterday. It was nice to walk across the Duver with them and to share a home cooked meal. The last two times they visited I was too ill to do either. Though our friendship spans nearly forty years the passage of time has done nothing to alter the sense of camaraderie we both feel.
